Summer Institutes & Programs
Sturgeon City Institutes offer a unique opportunity for a life enriching experience against the backdrop of the successful Wilson Bay Initiative, a project helping to restore our local habitat. The Institutes are offered as a service of the City of Jacksonville with the cooperation of the Onslow County School system and are operated by Sturgeon City of Jacksonville nonprofit. Students have the opportunity to learn about leadership, art, police sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering and physics through the various institutes offered. Instructors and guides are specifically chosen because of their subject knowledge, their concern for the community, and their ability to work with students.
Applications are now available for the June 24-28, 2019 Institutes. Students can choose to participate in one of the following:
Open to rising Freshmen only (8th Grade graduates).
Designed to help develop the scientific method and to foster consideration of science as a career. This institute provides a successful entry into high school teaching of the scientific method.
Intensely explore physics and engineering, marine science, medical science, chemistry, or science in general. Students sign up for specialties, working with others, and explore other topics. A teacher recommendation is required for the academy. The academy is open to rising high school juniors and seniors who desire advanced learning. Sophomores may be admitted with special permission. Specialities offered will depend on the interests of students who apply.
Public Safety Institute
Active duty police officers and other emergency personnel share their experience of what it takes to work in the Public Safety field. Learn from our experts about investigating crimes and responding to emergencies. Students will help solve a "crime", visit the Public Safety Complex, and receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the police and fire station in Downtown Jacksonville.
New Generation Leaders
This program is designed to help build young leaders through empowerment, team building, and community awareness. Activities will include a community service project and several community trips. There will be opportunities for team building, team leading, public speaking and project management. Mentoring will be offered, and students will learn how to work through difficult decisions.
Hone your creative skills through hands-on training with local artists. See the City in a new light as you explore various Jacksonville locations during artistic assignments. This is a chance to work with different types of media and grow creatively.
