The Jacksonville Police Department reminds all to be cautious when buying or selling items on local internet and social networking exchange sites.
As a service to the community, the Center for Public Safety maintains an Internet Shopping Exchange area in the public parking lot on Court Street. The marked parking area is well lit and monitored by cameras.
"Many people have taken advantage of this space to make safe internet shopping exchanges," says Captain Devon Bryan, JPD Supervisor. "The area is well traveled by law enforcement and a great public location for both parties meeting to make a shopping exchange."
Buyers and sellers are also welcome to meet inside the lobby of the Center for Public Safety.
Additional online exchange safety tips:
- Never give out personal information, particularly where you live.
- Never provide financial or banking information.
- Arrange to meet during daylight hours.
- Bring a friend.
- Never go into a neighborhood unless you're familiar with the person you are meeting and the neighborhood.
Captain Bryan also notes, "If the person you are meeting doesn't want to exchange items at the police department, it's a good indicator that you shouldn’t meet with that person at all."
